8N with no power

I have a 1950 8N, side distributor and have no power. New points, plugs, wires, condensor, rotor, cap, insulator and copper strap in the distributor. New float needle and gaskets in the carb. I cleaned the carb filter and sediment bowl. I have good gas flow to the carb and good clean gas. The main adjustment needle is turned out one and a half and dont seem to change anything by moving it. Runs smooth with the choke half way out sitting still. Start moving and it starts poping and running rough, It will end up dying. It will not rev up very fast and backfires when idleing down. any ideas?

First, check the plug wires. Firing order is 1243, CCW. It's real easy to cross 3 & 4.

Next, pulling out the choke gives you a richer mixture. So, you could have either a fuel or spark problem.

Dirty/old gas, or water in the gas can cause this problem.

Restricted fuel flow can cause this problem; remove the bolt at the bottom of the carb & check for flow.

On my 1950 frontmount, needing choke to run is the first sign that the points need adjusting/replacing. Re-check your point gap.

And, finally, a vacuum leak can do the same thing. Get a hand propane torch and carefully spray it (unlit of course) around the intake manifold of the tractor while it is running. Or, you can use carb cleaner or WD40. If it speeds up, you found the leak.

Bottom line: by far, most "needs choke to run" problems a fuel related, but do not rule out ignition problems. Just check the likely fuel problems first.

Please be sure to post back & let us know what the fix was. We all learn something if you tell us what worked!

Plug wires on wrong as Bruce says or you missed some thing in the carb. If you can not turn the main jet out to the point you get black smoke then your carb still needs work. Start it up and turn the main jet out and keep turning it to the point of black smoke or all the way out. If you can get it to the point it is all the way out and the engine still runs it is time to let the carb soak for a few more hours you missed something in it

Verify the timing,,, real pro's don't worry about the carb adjustments till they set the timing,,,, matter of fact its useless to fudge with the carb till you set the timing

RLBII......ya just replaced yer sparkie wires didn't ya? Well guess what? Check yer sparkie firing order. 1,2,4,3, CCW. These ol'N-engines are so good they will start and run on just 2-sparkies but won't have enny power. Usually neubies miss-plug sparkies 3 & 4. Check'em-out ......Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

(quoted from post at 07:28:48 01/11/09) Ya and timing just just jump out of place unless you have messed with it

HE DID but I spec y'all back yard bubba's adjust the carb before y'all do a tune up are have a perfomance problem first

As stated the last thing you do is adjust the carb after you verify every thing else is with in spec and operational

If you adjust the carb then set the timing then your carb needs to b readjusted

I do not read Any were in the post were he checked the timing,,, like you he missed a step as usual
