8N won't lift an implement when cold

The lift arms on my "49 8N are reluctant to lift until the tractor is well warmed up. After the tractor is warm, they lift well.

Yes, I keep the gear case filled to the proper level with Walmart Super Tech R & O hydraulic oil. The container doesn"t state the SAE weight, but I would guess it at 90W. Is it OK to use this oil?

No, I"ve never opened the pump. I guess I should clean and fix it up.

Bill........while the original 9N hydro-tranny oil was spec'd 90wt gear oil, Ford/New-Holland now spec's: M2C-134D hydro-tranny oil which is about 60wt.

You do know that as oil heats up from pumping, it THINS out, don't you? Its called the viscosity factor. This explains why yer 5-gals of Walmart Super Tech R & O hydraulic oil is slow to respond first thing in the morning. It ain't the proper weight hydraulic oil. Walmart does sell hydro-tranny oil that does meet spec: M2C-134. (read the fine print)

Me? I use M2C-134D in my eazy starting 6-volt 52-8N with outta problem. .......respectfully, oily Dell

I don't know what the weight of that oil is, but if it's 90w, it's probably causing the slow lift when it's cold like Dell said.

Check the label for compatibility w/ Ford spec mc 134d. And check out tip # 3 for other oil suggestions.

I'd change the oil before I'd worry about cleaning the pump.

Walmart does sell a version of their Super-Tec oil that says it meets the right M2C-134D spec.
In my neck of the woods its about a buck less than buying Rotella or any other name brand.
I don't know who makes the Walmart oil, so I don't really know if it worth the extra dollar to buy a name brand.
At ~$50 bucks per fill, I buy the name brand.
Be prepared tho, the thinner oil will show you were all your leaky seals are!

No. The Walmart R&O oil is a plain hydraulic oil. It does not provide the gear wear protection the transmission and differential require. You need a gear oil in the tractor.

In any event I doubt your problem is related to the viscosity of the oil. Common hydraulic oil viscosities and their approximate gear oil grade equivalents are ISO 46 (SAE 75W), ISO 68 (SAE 80), and ISO 100 (SAE 80W90).

Replace the R&O oil with either a mild EP gear oil (SAE 80W90, SAE 80, SAE 90, etc.) or a modern Universal Tractor Transmission Fluid (UTF). The UTF will be more along the lines of the R&O oil but will also have the EP additives needed for the gearbox.
