8n wont' start

I have a ford 8n that won"t start up. Keeping the started engaged it seems like it is running - but as soon as I let off the starter it dies out. It has spark, new plugs and I took the carberutor off and cleaned it. Any suggestions! Thanks

Any time now someone will ask which 8n you have, front or side mount dist. in the meantime are you sure you have the firing order right? 1,2,4,3.

It is a side mount distributor. I am positive I have the firing order correct. Tractor was running before. Sat through a flood - but I don't think water got up to the carb!

6v or 12v?

Had the battery cable off at the solenoid?

If it only runs w/ the starter engaged, you've got the wire to the coil on the wrong side of the solenoid. It goes on the battery side.

it is 6v. I had the starter out because the tractor was in a flood and it wouldn't engage (got rusty) and also took the batter out to charge and I replaced the solenoid.

t is a real good possiblity that you got the wrong solenoid.

DO you have spark to the plugs with the starter not turning but with key switch on? I like te remove dist cap and position engine so the points are closed and then open the points by hand while checking for spark at the coil high tension lead. Either that or leveave the points open and short between the two contacts while watching for spark out of coil wire.

If you have spark with the engine turning with the starter then spark is not your problem. Turn on the key and see if you have power to the coil when NOT turning the engine at the coil. Most likely you have the wrong solenoid or you goofed up the wiring while changing it. Don't sweat it, I can't begin to count how many cars, trucks and tractors I have fixed for people who have miss wired a solenoid.

Sounds like when you put the starter and solenoid back on you hooked the ignition wire on the wrong side of the solenoid so it runs if the starter button is held down but as soon as you let go of it you also stop power form going to the ignition.

Yep.

Wrong solenoid or wired wrong as others have said.

Thanks Bruce. I had the wire on the wrong side of the coil. Tractor runs now!
