Looking at a buying another 8n. It however has a rather loud grinding/growling noise when the PTO is engaged. RED FLAG? Or could it be a somewhat easy fix? When I say easy . Something a guy could do himself? Retired airtool service repair. Cost? Tractor in nice shape and price is right.

Sounds like a whopped-out PTO bearing. Easy job- for bolts and PULL! convert from the obsolete 1-1/8" shaft up to a modern 1-3/8" shaft unit while your doing
it- if somebody hasnt already...........

If you have them drive the rear wheels up on car ramps so the front end is down then no need to drain the oil. Or some other way to have the nose down rear up

If you've got a bearing ground up, I think I'd want to drain it and flush it anyway.

I agree and while you have the PTO out reach in and feel around to see just how much sludge is in there
