I have an 8n and the gear on the cam for the distributer moved forward and broke the timimng case cover and ruined the gear on the distributer. What caused this and will a new gear fix it ? or will it do it again ?

will any year 8n parts all fit ? where is the serial #?

John

front mount parts for a front mount.. side mount parts for a side mount when dealing with a dizzy, and cam, and timing cover.

John.......amazingly enuff, the cam gear did NOT move forward and broke the aluminum timing case cover.

What really happened is someone violated this "RULE: SHORT BOLT on TOP". Yer governor has 2-bolts and iff'n the previous owner mixed the 2-bolts and put the long governor attach bolt in top, it chews up the camshaft drive gear. (yer complaint) And yes, parts are available to fix it.

Realize 8N's come with 2-DIFFERENT dizzys. 4-nipple frontmount and 5-nipple sidemount. You can count nipples, can't you? Buy yer dizzy parts accordingly.

Engine s/n is weakly stamped on 1x4 flat boss just under the flathead gasket seam, aft of the oilfilter canister mount.

Recommend you squander $25 (cheap) for the I&T FO-4 manual. It even has pictures for the tractorally challenged. .......Dell

As Dell sez, you violated tip # 1 at the link below.

When you order the parts, order the manuals. (tip # 39)

You can tell what year the engine is by the serial number. It's on the left side of the block, below the head & behind the oil filter canister. If the serial number & casting codes on other parts match (or are close) then the entire tractor is probably the same year as the engine.

John Smith's site can tell you all about casting codes.

When you disasembled the engines, you shouldve found a cam thrust washer infront of the camshaft. When I took mine apart it didnt have one and chipped the cam gear and the case. We put in the part and think that the problem is solved. First, see if you have that part, if you dont look around for one and get one asap.

Dell, Yes the small distributer gear moved forward towards the gearcase housing and broke it. What holds the cam in place? the aluminum case cover ?

"What holds the cam in place? the aluminum case cover ? " YES.
..and when running, the angle cut of the cam/crank gears drive the cam back into the engine.
