I am looking at a 9 speed H what is the difference in the gears with this change and is it a kit a person can in install them selves like the Sherman in the gray Fords or does the tranny have to come apart

The gears and shifting components usually require some modifications of the case. (there are more than one brand). They provide gear ratios above the existing 4th gear, but do not change the direst (fifth gear) they are useful for some field operations like rotary hoe, and cultipacker. Also useful for medium speed wagon/road transport. Trans disassembly is needed for all versions. Jim

Usually you would start in regular fourth, then double-clutch
into first or second overdrive. Then shift into fifth which is
not changed by the overdrive. You might even start out in first
overdrive with a light load then go to fifth.

To clarify per how the question was asked, 1-4 in stock gears, shift in overdriven counter shaft 1-4 then; as mentioned 5th gear or road gear is same speed as stock because the power flow does not go through the bottom shaft in that gear. In other words the system adds 4 more gear ratio speeds between stock 4th..5.1 mph.. and stock road gear 16.4 mph. Yes, the install requires complete tear down of the transmission section.

Just start out in regular 4th, then once youre moving shift into 5th. No need to shift through the gears.

I have just enough hilly road travel to wish for another couple years between 4th and 5th. That and a few more cubic inches.

I've yet to come across a 9 speed for sale.

Is the H unit different than the one for the M?
