Never thought about it, but there sure is a large huge jump between 4th and the road speed, 5th. More gears in there might be good, very good.
 
Disadvantage is the PTO is going to operate at many times its rated speed. Do not use the PTO when the 9 speed is active. It does not change the PTO speed when in the normal range. Jim
 
If it has a hand clutch on the left side, it gives you live PTO also, i use to square bale with a H, and pull a 21 foot pull type swather, what i wouldn't of given for live PTO then !!!!
 
Sometimes handy with a ground driven Hay rake and some other things to have a speed faster than 4th. Also think they were aimed for the time period more farmers hauled crops by wagon and tractor a greater distance. With a regular transmission if you run out of power in road gear you dropped all the way down between 5 and 6 MPH on most. Next gear down with 9 speed from road gear is in the 10 to 13 MPH range. Also up shifts and downshifts from 4th and 5th were easy to do on the go with a little practice.
