901 brakes

Trying to put new brakes on my 901. Having trouble getting the brake shoe anchor pins out so that I can remove the old shoes. Clips came off with no trouble. Any suggestions? Thanks guys.

Those pins are a real problem even on a standard tractor. They're close to impossible on a row crop, because the final drive sits behind the front pins.

Everyone here seems to recommend cutting off the brake shoes, the pins are easier to remove once the shoes are gone. When I took mine off, I didn't think to cut off the shoes, but I was able to get the pins out by soaking them in penetrating oil and tapping the pins back and forth until they freed up. As I recall (it's been many years), I had to loosen the backing plate so I could squeeze a wedge between the pin and final drive. I would spray the pin, drive it in with a punch, spray it, drive it out with a wedge and repeat until they were free. Cutting off the shoes sounds easier.

You don't have to turn in the old shoes for a core charge so torch away the end of the shoe where the anchor pin is. Then use the torch to heat the bushing red hot and you can easily drive the pin out. Polish the pin and bushing and put anti-sieze on the pin when you put it back together.

Alan has given you good advice. It is nearly impossible to get adequate heat to the bushing, which is where the pin is likely siezed, with the shoe in place. Torch it away so that you can heat the buching.

Use anti sieze on the pins and bushings upon reassembly so that you can eqsily disassemble it next time.

I did one of my 901s a few months ago. I did cut the old shoes off and then heated the bushings. I didn't use a wedge but held the bushing and pin separately in order to get a little twist, then worked them back and forth until they suddenly freed up after enough rust powder came out. Hope you have a torch set as I wouldn't want to do it without the flame wrench.
