Wasn't really looking but this came up locally by me. Going to need a retirement project shortly and was thinking about it. Think it's worth a 5 or $700 offer? Never had an SOS and know NOTHING about them. Could letting them sit that long destroy them? I'm sure the motor probably needs to be rebuilt.
Here's what he posted in his ad:

Ford 901, not really sure on year or anything hasn t ran in over 15 years, just want it out of my yard $1,500 obo

If it sat outside in Missouri for fifteen years then the cases are full of condensation. If it was a garage queen then it may suprise you as a good tractor. The last one I drug home needed about $600. in tires, pedestal hubs and bearings thrown at it and turned out to be a real fine tractor.

I bought a very rough one last winter. When I went to look at it I removed the drain plugs so that I could check for milky oil. Indoors -outdoors makes no difference to condensation unless you run a dehumidifier like I do. That one looks EXTREMELY straight and clean. I would easily go $1001.00.

Long periods of non use are no more damaging to SOS transmissions than other transmissions.

That said, long periods of non use can be damaging to the hydraulic tubes inside of (any) Ford transmissions of similar vintage due to corrosion.

I would not sell that tractor for $500 - $700 if it was mine, unless I knew that it had serious issues.

Interested in a 64, 4000 SOS utility retirement project?

If it was a 4 or 5 speed it would be a very nice tractor. Being a S-O-S
Jerk-A-Matic it would be a parts tractor and that S-O-S would be crushed as
soon as I could get it to a crusher. I don't want to even be within 25 feet
of a running one after back in 1960 dealer demestrating one with 3 point
mower on that we were interesten in when the Ford Tractor dealer about thew
me under a rear while trying to demostrate the mower I will have nothingi to
do with a S-O-S tractor . The dealer lost a sale on that mower because of
the junk S_O_B tractor. After a tractor about makes you go under a rear
wheel when startin to move makes you never want to be around one. Or even
seeing one.

There was a learning curve to them like anything new. If you took a short cut and didn't follow operating instructions the SOS would creep if put in gear when cold. The brakes would prevent that, but some people just can't be bothered with safety procedures. They tend to die out.
