930 Case. Yes or No?

Couple farmers, neighbor's, had 930 & 1030's and they jumped at new 70-series when they became available. Dad bid up a 930 diesel WFE at an auction, looked really nice but it didn't have frame rails to attach a front mounted rowcrop cultivator to so we ultimately passed on it. Week later Dad had high bid on a 4010 diesel WFE that turned out to be a huge money pit, Dad got the front mounted cultivator for it too, the tractor would not turn tight enough to do a U turn on 8 38" endows, but once headed across the field it was O-K. I'd lay-by corn & beans at 10 mph 7th gear. Shift down to 4th to turn on the endows and set sail again. It was no great powerhouse, 4-14's about 5-6 inches deep was the max it could handle. Dad bought a Case 5-14 trailing plow, pulled it one morning and pulled the rear bottom off and it sold at our auction exactly that way, tractor, plow, 5th bottom leaning against the tailwheel of the plow. We had the pump turned up several times, Dad had a turbo bought for it but never installed it.
Dad had been looking for an 806 diesel, looking really hard, from Indiana to Iowa and Southern Wisconsin South to Central Illinois. Wasn't interested in a gasoline or LP gas, he had about a half a dozen dealers watching for one too. We'd been an IH farm for years, had two M's and an H, then traded an M for SM-TA, then 450. Had a Deere R diesel for 5-6 weeks and sold it. I wish I knew how many hours I ran that 450. The SM-TA was a good tractor. I think it had M&W sleeves & pistons in it, our straight M did and the SMTA would run right with it.

That’s a dandy 10th anniversary addition. :) Quite a story.

I wonder if he bought that tractor 10 years ago. I hope he did. I think Bob told him NO so he could go and scarf it up before anyone else. I worked for a guy when I was a teenager who had an open station 930 for his big tractor. He only had one chopper box. Would chop a load, then go unload it and then chop another. He was a good farmer and did very well for himself. Bill
