95 Chopper question

Ever sence I bought this combine I have been wondering what this set up is for. I havent seen another one like this with a pulley on the chopper to be driven off the straw walkers. What would this be used for? Bandit

You've got me on that one. First thing I thought of was someone wanted to speed up the spreader with that big pulley on the walker crank but that pulley on the left side of the chopper makes me think of chopper drive off the walkers.Looks like some farmerizing has happened at sometime in it's life. Driving the chopper off the walkers is asking for broken walkers. If I remember right the walkers are driven off the back side of the double sided belt. Not nearly enough power to run a chopper. Thats what I was thinking, Plus the fact that it would turn the chopper backwards. I have seen plenty that had spreaders on back that drives off the walkers but never a chopper. I was wondering if someone used it in corn running it backwards and slow and blowing it down so they didnt have to take it off. Seams like that would beat the crap out of the back end. Who knows what there idea was. Maybe someone knows I sure dont. Bandit

Without looking at a parts book or operator's manual my first guess would be that the combine at one time had a straw spreader on it instead of a chopper. The larger drive pulley and the idler pulleys close by seem to suggest this. Mike

I agree with Mike it is for a spreader.My one 95 has same pully and it came with a chopper and spreader.Owner used spreader when he got it new and latter switched to a chopper when they started growing more beans.

Bandit it is the drive for a straw spreader rather than a chopper. They where real common out here. Not very many soybeans where grown until the last ten years or so in Dubuque Co. They would use the spreader with corn and some times oats. Most of the time they took the belt off and windrowed the oats.

In the picture you can see how the belt was ran.

Guys I think there is a miscomuncation here, The chopper had been run off the straw walkers at some point before I got it. The way it was set up the chopper was running backwards off the straw walkers and it would run slow. I have seen this set up in an old manual someware but I dont remember why it was done this way or ware that manual is. Years ago they did do some strange things for some reason, I just dont know why?
