9500 engine fan

Broke a belt on our John Deere 9500 yesterday for the engine cooling fan. I can?t remember ever changing it so I looked in the book. Thought if it had the routing in there would save me some time since it?s pretty tight and the engine and radiator were very warm. Looking in the book there is a high speed and low speed pulleys or fast and slow. It was on the slow speed pulleys. My question is why are there two speeds and would I get better cooling on the high speed pulleys? It has always seemed to run pretty warm cutting beans. Would I be better to switch it?
