i am putting an alternator on my 960 ford. i have the small wire hooked to the input side of the resistor to the coil. where do i run the battery side to. thought anout putting it on the input side of the starter solenoid. also i have one side of the amp meter hooked up to the off on switch. where does the other wire go to. any help would be appreciated. thanks for reading

How about look at a wire diagram before you smoke something...Maybee even flip for a manual for that fine machine.. it REALLY deserves it!


Here's the skinny/ EZ charge/ignition wire diagram for fords from 39 thru 57 that used an ammeter

Wire all electrical loads on one side of the ammeter.. lamps.. ignition switches.. etc. ALSO wire your alternator here.. or the bat wire from the genny. From the other side of the amp meter.. put a wire to the battery.. or hot side of the solenoid... All there is to it. This gives you net charge / discharge system... If meter reads backwards.. swap posts / sides of the ammeter.

As for your alt.. If it is a 3 wire job, wire the bat stud to that 'load' side of the ammeter as i said.

Wire the #2 terminal to the bat stud.

Wire the #1 terminal thru a 194 lamp to the SWITCHED side of the ignition switch.

( you can use a diode.. like a 1n5408.. with the white strip towards the #1 terminal.. but heck.. I don't think you should use the diode based on your level of electrical experience ).

With the lamp wired in.. when you turn your key on.. the lamp comes on.. once you start the engine and the rpm comes up to about 400-600 rpm.. the lamp goes off.. this is lets yoy know the alt is charging.. and this is the classic 'idiot lamp' setup.
