Hi guys I thought I would share a post of my friends on the J I Case page facebook page, since he isn't on here. But he ended up finding his grandpas black knight.
Hello fellow J.I Case fans. This is the story of the Black Knight 970 that was posted on here a few days back. You all know the story of the demonstrators and case's plan to make leaps and bounds in the farming industry. In 1970 my Grandfather purchased the black 970 seen here in the photo. It was purchased from our local dealer in Sumner Iowa. Mind you all this was before I was born.(1972) They liked it so much, they bought a second one, this one was a 1973 Desert. Well it seems the black one was grandpas, and my dad ran the desert one. I learned to drive tractor standing on the floor with grandpa seated behind me guiding the steering wheel. Note I said I was standing....that's how little I was when I was last in this tractor. Well as farming continued to be good in the 70's my grandfather decided to trade the black one for a new 2090. Back then the black ones didn't mean much, and collecting was not practical. Well as time went on so did the 2090 and others after it. In the mid 80's the Sumner Case dealership closed, as did our International dealer. All the records of this business are long since lost. Later of course the CASE IH merger occurred. It wasn't until the early 90's I started farming on my own, and looking for the tractor.
The salesmen who sold us the tractor still lives in Sumner today. This past winter I found a 970 black knight in St. Cloud MN. I decided to purchase it as I figured I would never see Grandpa's tractor again.
Not but a few weeks ago I was invited into The J.I. Case group by a fellow Case lover Kenny. Kenny is my fertilizer dealer's son. On a recent trip to crop scout I showed off the black knight I have. And of course we spoke of the one I grew up on. This past Tuesday I received an e-mail about this tractor. After a few phone calls, I realized this is indeed grandpa's. I was told that each dealer was allowed 1 black tractor per year, for two years. Sumner sold (1) 970 and (1) 1070. If all goes well I will be heading down to Southern MO to pick her up and bring her home. My grandfather passed away in 2004, but his great grandson will soon get to drive the tractor that 3 generations have driven before him. Thanks to all of you CASE lovers. This is a dream come true.
