970 case powershit

i have recently bought a 970. It has a powershift transmission. i have been reading all the posts in the threads and have a few questions that have not been asked yet. Is there a good way to keep the tranny in good working order by way of maintanence, if so what kind? Is this powershift a decent tactor or should i relist as soon as it gets to the yard? Can you do any preventive replacement of parts to avoid complete failure? I thank you in advance.

As a case mechanic I would rather have the powershift. The best thing to do is keep the hydraulic fluid and filters changed. Always pill back the powershift lever when down shifting never push the clutch pedal in to down shift them specially under a load. Never leave thepowershift lever in reverse while doing stationary pto work. Doesnt hurt to let the tractor warm up a bit before using it in colder weather. They are a good tractor i wouldnt be afraid of it.

If your powershift is working as it should....then the best thing you can do is stay current on the filter changes on it. Also keep the fluid clean...maybe even change out the tranny fluid and filters when you get it home. Most often these are the culprit in larger failures and problems with this tranny. It will take a little getting used to when performing some tasks...(baling..loader work) but its a good trans and a real puller in the field...the torque converter on these tractors really makes them pull like thier larger than they are. I have both a 9 and a 1070 powershift....I like them both...also have the 8 speed versions of an 8 and 970. The 970's are my fav...great tractor both in gear and powershift....the 401 is quite a bit easier on fuel than the 451 as well...if you give it a chance you'll probably like your 970 too....great tuff tractors at a resonable price...and effiecient to operate as well. Hope my input helps....good luck with your new tractor.

this is great guys, thanks for the ideas. keep them coming. i should have the tractor home in a week or so. i will definatly change all fluids. and is there a brand that works better with the powershift. As a hd mechanic i use esso extra oil but if there is a brand that is designed for this please infoem
