971 question

Exactly where is the traction disconnect on a 971 and what does it look like? Pictures would be appreciated. Thank you.

Round cover on left side, has hyd dip stick in it. Has arm that is bolted to 1 cover bolt. Remove and turn shaft it is connected to also mat have wire for lube lite in it too.

That flat metal piece with 2 bends and a hole in each end is connected to the traction disconnect. The nut comes off, flip the metal piece around, and rotate the shaft on the bottom while rocking the tractor.

Thanks for the pic. Is it in the "connect" position in the picture? Which way would it rotate from there?

Those pics aren't all that good on my screen. But the eccentric flats will be virtually vertical when engaged and virtually horizontal when disengaged.

I'm not sure if it's in connect or disconnect in the pic. I think connect, and I think the top of the shaft will rotate toward the front of the tractor to disconnect. But I'm not sure about that. I have needed to rock the tractor by pushing on the tire (by hand) to get the shaft to rotate.

Thank you to everyone for the info. I have passed it along to my son-in-law. His father bought this tractor several years ago when it worked. True to form, he had to fix it until it didn't work. It is sitting at my daughter and s-i-l's house now. His father is in a nursing home. Mind is gone.

I blew the lower picture above up. The strap is in the disconnected position in the lower picture. One would take the strap off, flip it on the long edge and turn the shaft about 60 degrees counter clockwise to reconnect. Rocking the rear wheels while attempting to reconnect helps, as does a 12 inch adjustable wrench.

Hello , in addition to Larry's comments I would like to add mine as I also am involved with the disconnect on my tractor. I could not release the coupling and I had no idea of length of travel The lever would only move from a 12:00 posn. to about 10:30 pos. it had been out of the coupling groove. Upon removing the plate with the lever, I had to drive the coupling quite a ways to separate the 2 shafts. It moved hard! Hopefully yours works smoothly. Rebob#1

You may have disconnected the eccentric yourself, if you tried to move counterclockwise to disconnect. always rotate clockwise to disconnect and counterclockwise to connect.

We haven't done anything with it. The question is what my son-in-law's father may have done to "fix" it.

My reply was to Rebob! That's why I quoted what he said. I don't know what you've done or haven't done, nor what you need to do to fix your issue. Shoot! I'm not even sure what your issue is.
