971 selecto

I looked at a 971 selecto speed it shifted okay but the clutch or what ever it is called is held up with a bonge cord im guessing something is broke like a spring ins1de easy repair or should I walk away. Also has a new decal that says 901 selecto speed or should it say 971 ?

Also was wondering a place to buy parts for selecto and a repair manual thanks.

early ones had the 971 decal. By 1960, at least, they were 901 decals.

The Ford service manual with supplement covers it all. There is a spring under the top cover and support the spring is attached to. All the (3) SOS units the support has wear. Easy to inspect and service on the top cover is off. Do not attempt top cover service without following the manual. Be gentle with the shift cables, they are no longer available. Change the filter while you are in there.

Had this happen to my 871 years ago. Hook on the pedal return spring wore through and broke. Would have been an easy spring to replace, BUT the broken bit got lodged in the front shaft support bearing and destroyed it. $$$$$
