Got a 986 that lost high and low forward range removed range cover found pin that shift fork slides on had pushed too far back and let shift fork fall down. Does the clip that keeps the pin in position go to the front or rest of the fork? Also it is damaged in the spot where clip goes does the trans have to be torn down to replace the pin?

By looking at the parts book it looks like they go on both sides of the shift fork. They are snap rings.
No you can take the top link cover off the back, and reach with a piece of heater hose, and push or remove that shaft from the rear. If you can reach it to touch adequately you don't need the heater hose. I can't quite reach it. With the hose pushed on about 1-2 inches it would hold it to pull out of there. We used a rag over the shaft with a vise grip on it to hold without putting nicks in the shaft. You could also hold it with the vise grips to move it back to the location it needs to be to put the snap rings back in place if they are still on the shaft. We did this to change an 806 to the 56 series shifting mechanism. We changed that shaft this way.
