9N 12 Volt Conversion issues!!

I converted my 9N to 12 Volt and have had issues with the wire coming from the alternater getting so hot it melts the outside coating, Any idea why it is getting that hot, it is almost like the alternator does not stop charging? The wiring goes-Alternater-AmpGauge-Battery.
