Push the lever forward and the arms move about an inch...try to go down but wont??? Thanks

There are only two adjustments to the 9N lift. The first is the main spring. When the arms are fully raised you should be able to turn it. There should be no slack and no preload. Adjustment is achieved by turning the yoke. Good luck with that as most are rusted and will not turn.

The second adjustment is to loosen the four bolts on the quadrant and move it forwards or backwards. See if that helps.

Banjoman09, did you determine that your tractor is in fact a 9N? If so, you could remove the round inspection plate on the curb side of the tractor that has the dip stick in it. Although I understand the early 9Ns had a dip stick on the transmission cover. Anyway when you get that cover off, you can reach down in there and and trace the linkage that connects to the control valve. The 8N has two control valves. Anyway what you are looking for is to see if the control lever is actually moving that valve in and out. It may be stuck.
Here is another piece of advise. Purchase a copy of the I&T FO-4 service manual. This site has them. You might like a copy of the 9N operators manual and a Master Parts Catalog for 1939-1953 Ford Tractors too.

ok thanks...I bought this yesterday in Wichita.Ks. .the guy ran it up on my trailer and we chained it down and I brought it home; guess I should have check it out a bit more.

There is a round 4 bolt plate on both sides of the tractor on the side of the rear-end unit; which side? I need to drain the oil?
