9n about to expire.

Have had this 9n about 25 years. Always runs good never much trouble. Other day plowing some snow and it started to make this super load banging noise. Cant tell if it's coming from the engine or trans. But its load and sounds like its going to blow up. I d iij d shut it off quickly but later I did try to start it and it did start right up.any ideas, thanks

May have pulled the flange off of a sleeve and banged it up and down till it got stuck some how. Time will tell. Just a guess on my part.

Next time the noise occurs use a stethoscope to locate the noise.

Noise does not cause a problem, it's a result of a problem.

Check your starter bendix. Easy to check (pull starter) and it's common problem for something to go awry with them, fly out/bind during operation, and cause exactly the type of noise you describe. Easy/cheap to fix. I certainly wouldn't guarantee that's your problem, but it'd be one of my first starting points.

careful not to have the armature fall out I've heard they are a pain to put back in.
