41 9n wont hold a charge, it has a 12 volt system. I just had the alt checked everything good there. Lights are not hooked up so no juice going there. Whats my next step?

Make sure the cables & all connections are clean & tight.

How old is the battery? Get a $5 hydrometer & check out the battery (tip # 49 at the link below) or remove the battery & take it to the local auto store; they should be able to test it.

If it's not the battery or poor connections, post back w/ the type of alternator you are using; some models & the way they are wired are more prone to discharging a battery than others.

Does the battery hold a charge when disconnected from the tractor further ruling out a bad battery?

Is this a common Delco 10SI alternator conversion?

If not, post back with more information.

Check the voltage on the #1 and #2 terminals on the alternator with the engine stopped/key "off".

#1 HAS to read "0".

#2 will read battery voltage.

IF there is voltage to the #1 terminal under these conditions, the battery will be drained through the alternator's voltage regulator/rotor circuit.

If all is OK there, to positively determine if the alternator is causing the battery drain, disconnect ALL the wires from the alternator, and tape them to prevent accidental shorts. Does the battery STILL drain?

So, let me get this straight.

If I get a "0" reading at both terminals I should take the alternator in to get it checked?

Electricity is so stinkin" confusing!!!!!
