9N Block ID

Would the first digit after the 9N on the block ever be a letter? I swear mine looks like the letter "I" not a number 1. If I assume it's a 1 then next is 3XXXX then that would make it a 1940 correct? Thanks for the help Scott
 
Scott......yes, many times the weakly hand stamped engine serial number included cap letter "I" for numeral "one" and lower case letter "b" for numeral "six" or upsidedown for numeral "nine". Dunno ask why. I wasn't there (grin) ......Dell
 
I an 1 are common swaps.. but it stands for a '1'

se alotta things that look like a b vs a 6 as well.

1944, I believe. Yes, the 1 stamp does look like an I.
 
The 1 and 6 hand stamps were changed at some point to resemble an I and b. There is a thread or a history page explaining this on this site or the other one.
