Well after chasing what I thought was weak spark for a very long time. I have discovered a section of missing teeth on my cam timing gear. Good news is I know what the problem is, bad news is its a pressed on gear.

My question is, are there still press on gears avaialable or do I have to change the cam and all? The FO 4 says that the pressed gears are gone but I want to make sure before I spend a bunch of money.

Thanks for the input.

I havent changed a gear in many years but as I recall all of the new ones are bolt on. Doesnt make much difference since you have to pull cam anyway, on the amount of work. Remember if you buy a new cam its pretty much standard practice to put new lifters on it since they sort of wear together. You might save a few bucks by buying a old cam and press on gear somewhere and using that used gear on your cam. But myself i would bite the bullet and buy a new cam and lifters. maybe even look at a set of rotating valves also if they havent been changed over the years.

I have some used cams with gears and the matching used lifters if the cost of new is too hard to take. Email is open.

I am interested in a used one for sure, I am retiring the old girl to light duty only, just need to get her running good again.

I cant find where to E-mail you so mine is jcattrell "at" hughes "dot" net

Thanks

Dennis Carpenter has press on gears for 30 bucks.I was buying cam gears for 8 bucks from old Ford parts dealers when a tractor place was getting 49 bucks for the same gear.Ford V8 engines used the same gear 36 to 41.Check with Joblot auto, they may have a lower price. An expert on this forum says the press on gear has no timing marks, hes wrong.Have a shop press on the new gear.

You dont have to pull the cam for a bolt on gear. The cams offered for 150 bucks are used reground.30 bucks will buy a new press on gear.
