9n dist spark ?

WB 9n

New User
Got what appears to be an original 9n still on 6 volt positive ground. I've changed carb and adjusted per manual specs..new gas line...new shut off and sed bowl...new battery...new coil...points...rotor and cap. She's hard to start most days...when it does start..generator is showing about 10amp charge on the low setting.. and the contacts close on the cut out. turn it up and the cut out opens and no charge on amp meter... put a plug light tester on it and at low rpm shows bright spark...but the higher the rpm it starts to send less spark and starts to miss..can see it in the test light and hear it backfire. Barely enough power to pull itself. Whats some ideas? This is just my toy and not the usual work tractors. Pulled the dist off and timed it per the manual instructions.. set plug gap (autolite 437) and points to the manual specs. Is it time to rip out the 6 and go 12 volt? Is it possible the dist is the problem and maybe the weights are not working properly...they did open when I had it apart to check points and timing.. New to this old girl and style tractor...so looking for any pointers.

Welcome to the forum!
Was there any wobble in that distributor shaft when you had it out?
There shouldn't be any noticeable side-to-side movement.
If there is not, what type of points did you use? If they were cheap
ones I might suspect those, although they will usually work for a little while.
Front mount point gap at .015 on all 4 lobes?
Maybe easiest to check, firing order 1-2-4-3 CCW?
Make sure #3 and #4 are not reversed.

I've encounter this problem before (Good spark at low RPMs and poor or intermittent spark at higher RPMs. Corrected it by replacing the points.

Thanks guys....don"t remember any side play in shaft....had a little front to back movement. Also.don"t remember the brand of points...didn"t see name on them....should I splurge for the blue streak sold here or try what my local advance or oreily has?
