9N Ford identification

Help! I need to know how to identify the exact model of my 9N ford. Where are the model or serial numbers located? How do I determine if the tractor is a 9N or an 8N? I am getting ready to list as a sale and do not want to mislead anyone on the exact model that I am selling.
Thanks for any info!

You can tell what year the engine is by the serial number. It's on the left side of the block, below the head & behind the oil filter canister. If the serial number & casting codes on other parts match (or are close) then the entire tractor is probably the same year as the engine.

John Smith's site can tell you all about casting codes.

If it's a 3 speed w/ the brakes on opposite sides, it's a 9N or a 2N.

4 speed, brakes on the right side, it's an 8N.

9Ngirl.........ALL 9N's and 2N's came from the factory with weird 4-nipple frontmount distributor and side-of-block serial number behind the oilfilter mount. ALL s/n's start with 9N-XXXXXX. (ittza Ford thing) BOTH 9N's and 2N's have 3-speed trannys. (8N's have 4-speed trannys) Ford changed from 9N's to 2N's at s/n 9N99003 in May 1942 because of WW2 war production price controls. The early 2N's had STEEL WHEELS and NO starters 'cuz LEAD and COPPER and RUBBER were being used to make tanks and guns and ammunition. Within 6-mos, Ford had rubber, lead, copper to make regular tractors. Steel wheel 2N's are rare 'cuz most were re-tired to rubber ag-bar tires and 6V-batterys and starters.

Except fer the serial number, there is NO DIFFERENCE between 9N's and 2N's. As usual with old tractors, prices are negotiable. (start high and negotiate downward) While neubies think fresh shiny paint make old tractors more valuable, its really the condition of then BIG ag-bar lug tires that sets the value. (they're worth $300 each)

Ittza good that you asked first. Good condition 3-speed 9N's & 2N's are worth about $2000 and 4-speed 8N's worth about $2500. non-runners are worth about $500 scrap. There is NO BLUEBOOK of old tractor prices. .......the clueless Dell
