9N Front Mount Cut out relay

On my 41 9N six volt positive ground system I have found the brand new POS cut out relay is sticking closed, re-aligned the contacts points and sanded them so they both meet flush but you can see they constantly arch when the tractor is running when you shut of the tractor they will not break contact and drain the battery.
Also noticed the single wire generator has an out put of 21.7 volts DC is it possible that I have the wrong generator one for a 12 volt system?
3rd brush adjustment had no affect on output voltage just on the ampere output.
If I were to install a Diode what size do I purchase and where is it installed? On the battery lead to the battery terminal or inside the cut out relay?

With no load, 21v is not surprising..not intended to run no load & given time that will ruin it. Constantly switching cut out contacts may occur if generator output is opposite of battery polarity or could just be a bad cut out. Diode is substituted for / in place of cut out. Some put it in same can, so it looks factory.

Ole Schmitd! You start with a 6v Pos. grnd and then go to a 12v Generator. MAYBE, you have an 'Alternator', is it shiny and maybe 7" long ? I think you should apply a picture so that the 'Pros" (not me) could be better informed. A "single wire" generator that puts out "21.7 V don't sound right AT ALL.

(quoted from post at 20:47:20 08/20/12) some of that stuff looks familiar.. ;)
hat I was actually trying to do was credit you & Rick for pictures & drawings, but my cut 'n paste didn't workout, so again:

Better? No wet noodles!

I would say I deffinetly have a bad cutout relay so I guess I won't feel bad at all doing a little monster garage work on it to install a Full wave Bridge Rectifier 50V 25 amp
Can't hurt it any more it's all ready broke LOL
Thanks all
