9N help needed

I bought this thing for a little of nothing but it has been farmerized beyond belief. :? You guys helped me with the 8N and now I really need you! :D It is a (9N front mount dizzy and has a 1 wire genny. The PO put a 12 volt battery on it and dis-connected the generator, removed the ballast resister, dis-connected the safety push button starter and put in a dash mounted push button starter switch. He did put a resister (2 terminal 1.5 ohms) going to the coil. The original cut out relay is there but has been ruined and is missing the cover too. NOW, my question is if I should replace the 12 volt battery and go back to 6 volt, the generator seems to be OK,,just not hooked up. Do i need the resister that is there now along with the ballast resister? :? I am ordering the parts from here but need to know what I need to make this beast work as it should. It runs great now as it is but I want it right. Thanks for all the previous help and I know y'all can get me through this.
Thanks guys,
Fred

the 6v square coil needs a oem ballast resistor plus another converting resistor.. the newer 12v square coils still need the oem ballast resistor.

find out what coil you got and go from there.. either will need the oem resistor.

check the safty manual start switch.. if contacts are good.. just hook back up. and get rid of the solenoid that was added

motor test the genny

3rd brush turned up, belt off, jump bat to arm.. if she spins, genny probably charges..

got a spare 6v bat to put in her and test her with .. if so, you can do so without the cutout just for a test.. if she charges good.. then go get a cutout.. or if you have a spare vreg.. us the cutout portion of it.. ( bat and arm only ).

post back.

It is +ground. I meant to say he replaced the push button safety switch in front of the shifter. He DID put on a new starter solenoid but it is a 4 pole type and not the 3 pole like my 8N was. It also has a sherman hi lo trans. The shift lever is on the left side and has a straight type lever, not the angle one. I need to know if I should replace the wiring harness, battery, ballast resister any how to wire it back up. The generator does work but I'm not sure how to know if the coil is a 6 0r 12 volt, it is a square can front mount.
Thanks for helping so far,
Fred

the non bent sherman handle is for an overdrive.. not a combo hi / low ( straight thru ).

the coil primary impedance can be measured .5-1 ohm.. 6v.. 1.5-2.5ohms is 12v.

no relay needed if it is a 9n / 2n as they have a manual start button...

probably no vr on a 9n with a 1 wire genny.. probably just a cutout.. and i think he already mentioned it was gutted.

I think I had really rather have it back to 6 volts as original. I just haven't been able to figure out all the PO has done to it. The shifter arm for the sherman has 3 positions,is one of them (middle) a neutral?
Thanks guys, as always you all are a great help.

Fred

Fred.......you ask......."The shifter arm for the sherman has 3 positions,is one of them (middle) a neutral?" ...YES... You do know that NEITHER yer 3-speed 9N tranny ...nor... yer 2-speed Sherman are shift on the go. Just putt'em in gear desired BEFORE letting up on the clutch pedal .......Dell

I have a 9n,and I checked out the wiring in the I&T manual. There are also wiring diagrams in the archives, just look in there for them.If you hook up a new battery,+ground, and follow the diagram for 9n wiring,go through the ballast resister on back of dashboard.A generator and starter shop,Mom &Pop style will check the generator and sell you a cut-out for a good price and have you running in no time.Hook up the starter circuit like it's supposed to be.If there are parts missing or broke, fix them. You can get all the parts right here to get it back to the way it's meant to run.Mine's all original[+or-]and if it doesn't behave right,I know why,not looking for what someone else did.---lha

Thanks to all of you for the help!! Now to start ordering some parts and go mow some. I"ll let you know how it comes out after I get it back to the way it"s supposed to be.
