9N Hood removal

Anybody have any tricks or advice on wrestling that hood on and off???
First time I took it off I broke my overflow hose on the neck of the radiator. Soldered that back up.....
Then I used a hoist and a nylon strap and it still didn't go real smooth.
Seems like it wants to come up by the console first. Then you have to spread the sides. Barely clears steering wheel. Lifting front and I managed to tip radiator (accidently) and pulled top hose loose.
Now I have to do it again and looking for advice or is there a certain order of events.

It's not too bad to do with an empty gas tank, are you trying to wrestle it with some gas in the tank?

If you remove the legs at the front,it's not that hard. There are only a few bolts and nuts holding them. Get some help to make it easier,my Wife helped me remove mine.

Remove the steering wheel, that gives you the ability to lift it straight up. and then empty gas tank. Bottom of dog legs not hard to loosen, I would not want to try to take them off rest of hood. owner of 41 9n & 44 2N

Remove the steering wheel. Steering wheel is much easier to remove on a 9N than an 8N. 9N is keyed while 8N is splined. Drain gas tank. Get a
helper.

Thank you one and all. The hood goes back on this weekend after I run a compression test and replace plugs and tailor new copper plug wires and replace points and replace manifold gaskets. I want to get this all done while the hood is off. If I booger up the overflow tube again then I might cry.

This is my "high tech" hood removal set up. As others have said, remove steering wheel first. Well worth the time spent! I use a 2x4 w/4 chains & an eye bolt & a block & tackle (not in pic).

The shop manual explains how to remove the hood. First step is
to remove the steering wheel. Remove the fuel line and radiator
cap. Then under the grill you loosen one bolt and remove one
bolt on each side. Then the little brackets swing out of the
way. No need to remove the grill. Lift up on the front first,
then the back and it will lift right up and off.

With just a little more thought and engineering, Ford could have made the hood hinge forward. They were almost there and appear to have had that idea the way they made it.
I tried to pull the steering wheel. It was stuck so I lubed it up and put the acorn back on. Maybe it will pop off. There is a line about it in 75 tips....

Someone on here some time ago suggested using your 3 jaw gear puller by taking the jaws off & simply using the straps w/a bolt under each crossbar. Tighten it good & tight & whack it w/a hammer & they usually pop right off.

I have learned to not over tighten the steering wheel. Makes it
much easier to remove next time.

Plus some Anti Seize on the shaft and in the wheel hub will make it easy next timr it needs to come off.

Good afternoon: I believe a good whack with a hammer will damage the lower tapered roller bearing on the steering wheel shaft. A puller should work, the trick with any puller on these 9Ns is trying not to break the ancient "hard rubber" plastic steering wheel material. Just my opinion! Good luck.

By golly, taking off the steering wheel was the key. Simple hood removal straight up and down.
Steering wheel was a rough go to get off. Finally, reluctant to bang on things, I devised a puller.
Tractor is a 2N and steering shaft was keyed.
