9N Ignition

I am helping out some friends repair their '41 (possibly '42) 9N and am having lots of problems with the ignition and getting spark. This is a 6V positive ground system still. The motor will turn over, but no spark at the plugs at all. So far I have replaced the coil, condenser, plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap and the battery. I did find out that someone before me tried to jump the dead battery with a newer 12v system. Is there a fuse or something that I am missing, or something in the distributor that would need adjusting and/or replacement? I am told that before the battery went dead, it was a very strong running motor. Thanks!

Leo........dunnno, NO FUSES.

Howsomevers, unless yer familiar with the frontmount distributor, there are some gottchas. You do realize its a 2-bolt 15-min job to remove the distributor and change points on the kitchen table, don't you? Its an off-sett tang drive scheme and cannot be installed outta time.

POINTS SLIP!!! recheck yer points gap. (0.015") The SHORT points screw (#8-32x3/16) gitts invisable wear and won't hold.

Be certain to "polish" the new points contacts with dollarbill or brown paper grocery sack. Why? 'cuz the points gitt invisible corrosion between them.

Gently stretch yer coil springy-thingy to make a more certain contact in the hollowhead screw. Sometimes the tab also needs to be bent for tighter contact in the groove.

NEVER EVER JUMP 12-volts direct to the 6-volt battery terminals, they EXPLODE!!!

12-volt JUMP direct to the starter motor STUD.

And iff'n you've been crankin' on the engine long time, replace yer sparkies with NEW CLEAN DRY sparkies 'cuz you done FLOODED yer sparkies with "invisible" no-lead contaminates. Don't throw'em away, clean and dry'em one-atta-time in hot running engine and save'm fer next time you have hard starting problems.........Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

Do you have power at the wire feeding the coil? This is the first check. If you don't have a meter a simple test light will work well,on 6 volt it will be dim.
