9N PTO coming out

I have a 2N PTO problem. For reference: it's the kind with the two snap rings sandwiching the bearings and holding the shaft in the housing.

For the second time, the outer most snap ring has become flared enough to allow the PTO shaft to pull out of housing. Of course, it starts with a lot of wobbling and then oil leakage.

Is it normal to have that much outward pressure on those snap rings? Would you advise changing those for new ones?

the first time this happened, I flattened the ring back out on an anvil, reassembled, and topped off with oil.

Both times, I bush hog about 3 hours and it starts wobbling and leaking.

Bad bearings can have that effect.

When bearings start to fail, I have noticed that they have a "hammering" effect on the snap rings.

I just replace the whole assembly in my dads 8n for a similar issues; lots of oil leaks and popping out of gear. He runs a heavy rotary cutter too. Lots of forces playing on that PTO shaft with the cutter bouncing around.

You can keep playing w/ it (your time, your money) or just replace the entire shaft, bearings & all.

Shaft w/ bearings, seal, etc will cost about $100 - 110.

AP, I just did what Bruce suggested to my Fergy, and it solved a multitude of sins: leaky seal, loose bearings, and no threads for a PTO cover in the housing. (I suspect that the housing can wear out also, and continuing to replace seals and bearings would be futile.)

after it pops out enough.. the bearing carrier land / groove becomes rounde dover and it will pop out often and not hold. that snap rin may be damaged as well.

as others mentioned. incorrect length pto shaft may be bottoming out.. and if they had bad drag on extension it puts force on t he rings too

Thanks everyone for the advice. The implement shaft has plenty of room to move and does so freely. I'm pulling the housing off this afternoon to check that raceway in the housing.

I'm glad to know there isn't any other major issues causing the problem. A new housing/bearings/snaprings are things I can afford.

entire assy ready to slap in is like 110$ before shipping. probably 130$ to your door depending on where you are.

if the snap ring groove has any wear on it.. that's what I'd do.. even though you COULD get a new housing and go fromt here.. but then you'd need a seal.. then a wear ring. then why not a bearing.. etc..e tc.. etc.

labor has to be worth something.

this site sells the entire assy ready to install with a new gasket..e tc.
