9N Questions

Here are some numbers: Right side of block-OJ1153, Left side of block-9N92273. What year is this 9N? What carburetor & governor repair kits fit this tractor? One more thing if I remember correctly, when I was driving my uncle's 9N in the 40's I was always controlling the engine speed with the throttle lever, unlike the Allis Chalmers where engine speed could be set and would pretty much stay there up hill & down. I now own a 9N and it acts the same way. Any thoughts beyond what I asked for at the beginning of this thread?

Look on carb,if original will be marvel/shebner,if so one fits all[8n,9n,2n]gov:ditto. You need to get a manual,I&T-F-04 is a good one, availible lots of places. Has tons of info, like serial#s,etc.---lha

YT serial number guide says its a 42 using the number he posted. I hope I read it right. Says the 42 year models start at 9N89888 Devious

For starters, the relationship between the gov arm and the carb are not correct. You could also have a weak or wrong gov spring. Make sure the control and carb arms are not reversed on the gov. Ford made a gauge for a mechanic to properly set this up, but, since I didn't have one, I used a vice and large set of channel locks and got real good at taking the gov off and putting it back on. Until I had it properly adjusted, my motor would run away when I throttled up and I had to control speed with the throttle while under any load.

Here's what I did...my 2N would start at idle so I disconnected and tied off the linkage from the gov to the carb. I started the tractor and pulled fwd on the gov arm until I felt tension. I noted that position and shut the tractor off. I reinstalled the carb linkage, made sure the throttle was shut and noted the difference in the position of the gov arm. That difference was how far towards the front of the tractor I needed to bend the gov arm. For me it was about 3/8"...once I did that, the gov controlled the engine perfectly.

Whether or not the gov needs a rebuild is a whole different story.

Hope that helps...
