I'm rebuilding a early 41 9n and have a few questions. The cooling system is non pressurized and I can't find any non pressurized radiators. Do most people just convert to pressure system? The cam gear is micarta press-on that I also can't find. Also who have you had good luck with as far a rebuild kits go. And the pro and cons of the 4 ring piston verses the 3 ring. Thanks for any help this is my first ford restoration. Just looking for some ford advice.

xj4343.......while the early 9N had non-pressurized radiator, go ahead and use the pressurized radiator. The caps are different so you need new 4psi pressure cap. There is a reason why Ford changed to the pressurized system, it works BETTER. And ALWAYS use 50-50 anti-freeze.

As fer the micarta press-on cam drive gear, read all about it down the page about "Dennis Carpenter". Me, I would NOT replace the "plastic" drive gear, byte the bullet and install the 4-bolt camshaft.

As fer 4-ring vs 3-ring. The 4-ring was a BAD attempt to control oil burning. The 4th-ring kept oil from sealing the top compression rings and guess what??? Worn-out engine. Besides the modern 3-ring piston is actually 5-rings. The oil control ring is made of 2-thin scraper rings separated by wiggly ring. There is a reason WHY all modern gas engines use just 3-rings. .......respectfully, Dell

Ditto Dell's advise on the pistons. Go with 3 rings. Unless you are string for a 100% authentic restoration I would also advise using a newer radiator.

When I called Dennis Carpenter, they told me they had 973 of the fibre cam gears if I remember correctly. Its in my previous posts.
