9n starter 6volt

My starter seems to have gone out.Just a little bumping sound when starter button pushed. When I jump across solenoid terminals i get same sound. Any tricks for replacing it. I have read that you don"t want to spin the starter before its mounted or the starter gear moves out on the bendix and its tricky to get it back in place. Where is the best place to get a new starter ?

IF your starter is truly bad. then removal is 2 bolt sand a lil wiggling. some take the oil filter canister loose and pull the drain cock to get wiggle room.

it may be rebuildable. i'd rebuild it if you have a local shop.

otherwise you can get repops from here or other plae slike the dealer or farm stores.

if buying new. why not support this site that runs these help forums.

" My starter seems to have gone out."

Don't get ahead of yourself.

You've got some more troubleshooting to do.

The starter is probably making a noise because of low voltage. That is likely caused by:

1. A weak battery (charge it & check it per tip # 49))
2. Dirty grounds/connections (remove the cables & clean the connections)
3. Bad cables or incorrect sized cables (replace them - see tip # 41)
4. Bad ground between the starter & the block. (pull the starter away from the block & clean the mating area - see tip # 36)

If none of that works, check out tip # 43.

If that does not work & you need to pull the starter, check out tip # 36.

And never, ever buy a new starter for these N's. Take it to a local rebuild shop. If you don't have one locally, these guys do 'mail order' work; give them a call to get a quote & shipping info.

And, they also do carbs, brakes, generators, water pumps, clutches, etc.

David,Your starter drive may be stuck/wedged into the flywheel.Loosen the two starter attachment bolts up a bout 3 turns (don't take them out yet).Place the transmission in 3rd gear, grab the rear tire lugs and rock the tractor back and fourth hard as you can.Listen and feel for the drive to pop loose, while watching for the fan blade to turn.
