Hi, i cannot press down on the starter button that is located on the transmission cover of my 9N. It has sat for 30+ years. I took the button off and oiled it up, so the button goes up and down. When I reinstall it on the tractor, I cannot move it. What should I look for?
thanks,
Kevin

Can't help much, but is the tractor in neutral? I know guys will often bypass those starter buttons and put one in the dash.

Yes, it is in neutral. I have tried it in gear, and have absolutely no movement then. I can move it a trifle when in neutral.
thanks.

Try in neutral and jiggling the shifter, your interlock pattern and or shifter nub may be worn, stacking tolerances, and it not quite thinking it in n

If your 9N tractor is built after serial number 12499 then the button has to push a lever that then pushes a rod to push the start switch fastened to the front side of the steering box, down below the battery. The rod, the lever or the switch assembly may be seized.

Kevin, remove starter button #1 and remove starter button #3. Both of these should operate freely when you depress the button on each of them. The long pin #2 should move freely back and forth about 1/2". Will be a little tricky seeing in there.
