9N Starter problem (yesterday post)

9N front mount. Had posts yesterday, all very helpful. Ended up removing starter and bench tested. Cannot get to turn over by jumping to terminal and ground. At this point should a repair be attempted or should I purchase a refurbished starter?

Interestingly, old recommended taking to auto parts store for bench testing. NAPA said they could not do it (I think 6V scared the guy off), O"Reilly"s said "well, er, I uh...", basically that they could not do it either.

It should take a 12v test.

I would rebuild or have it rebuilt. Look for an auto electric shop that just does generators, starters and alternators. I replaced the brushes in one, not too difficult a job.

Well see there is where you made the mistake you told them 6 volts you you wnet over there head and now days people do not understand that once a pond a time there where 6 volt systems. Just tell them it is off a Ford 9N and then they can test it just forgot the 6 volts. I know my local O'Reilly's can test them since I have had them do it but then I have educated many of the guys there

Agree with a couple others; find an alternator/generator/starter shop that has been in business for decades. May look run down, nothing like the new autobox stores. The guy in my town recognized the box of parts I took him as a Ford starter. First time I took mine off, I didn't know the thing disassembled itself if you took both long bolts out. They put new brushes in, put it back together, and charged me $15 or $20. It was years ago; later on had a new style bendix put in, no problems since.

Not sure about in your area but in my area your lucky if you can find an alternator shop and if you do it will cost you more the have them rebuild one then it cost to order one from Y-T or nnalert. We had a good shop here 10-15 years ago but he got shut down due to Gov regs and lack of business

I'm really surprised/disappointment that your NAPA would not test it. You need a new NAPA :-(

Should you need to replace it, I would recommend getting this one rebuilt rather than purchasing new. There's a shop in Richmond VA that does excellent work and will do mail order. Turn around time is about 7 business days, including shipping time.

Email me or Bruce(VA) for the address and phone of this place if you're interested.

He made the simple mistake of saying 6 volts so the guys believed there equipment could not test it since it was 6 volts instead of 12. I ran it no that years ago and said hey humor me and try it any how and sure enough they found that be it 6 or 12 volts there machine did not know the difference.

I'm still surprised. A good auto parts counter should know how to work with both, I would think.

PS: How was deer opener? Did it end up being pretty cold? I've always heard it said that cold and inclement weather will get them moving more.

He did nothing wrong. His counter people are idiots. Period.
I've run into that a lot when I've gone to big chain stores like
AutoZone or O'Reilly's and some NAPA's.
I had to tell the folks at the local O'Reilly's how to use their
machine to test a standard GM 10SI alternator.
If it hadn't been a Sunday I would have walked then.
I don't have time to train the counter personnel.
I go elsewhere whenever possible.

In my town I have O'Reilly's or the new auto zone. So since I have lived here for 33 years now the people in O'Reilly's have learned to do well or run. But then I have trained a good many and many are now friends who refer people to me who need help fixing there tractors

Alternative season opened on Saturday. We had rain and freezing rain that day so I did not go out. Next morning we had ice all over on the trees etc. I went out that afternoon but the wind gust where bad so it sounded like a bowl of rice crispies with a mic. and amp so I saw almost nothing including birds

It's nice that you have time to train them. I don't.
To blame it on the customer is just flat wrong.

I went to the auto store and asked for a radiator hose, he asked me how long I wanted it?? I told him until I sell the truck then I will bring it back!! He just stared at me....

I'm guessing it just needs new brushes and maybe bushings. You can get a kit and fix it your self.

The last time I went to NAPA I wanted a carb kit for a 8n. The kid said he could not look it up without the VIN number off the tractor??!

Good time to learn to repair a starter. While we are on the subject.Country shops and many general stores are gone here.People run the roads to the city stores.Friend called a big shop on fixing a Ford starter .100 bucks .I fixed the starter for 10 bucks.New brushes and a light turning on the commutator.Friend had a generator bearing quit on his MF tractor.I baled the hay he had down with my tractor and fixed the generator while he picked up the hay.Cost him zero because he lent me his tractor when the top bearing in the steering box on my tractor came apart.
