My 9n tractor goes from idle to wide open if you just crack open the throttle. I have replaced the governor, points plugs and have rebuilt the carb. still same results. Anyone have any ideas?

" Anyone have any ideas? "

Yes.

First, diagnose the problem before you start throwing parts at it.

There are two schools of thought when it comes to getting a non-running tractor to start. One way is to just start replacing every part you can get to until it starts or you run out of money. The other way is to take a step-by-step approach to solving the problem, working from most likely to least likely. The trick to fixing these tractors (or trouble shooting any piece of equipment) is to be systematic about it. You need to isolate the problem step by step and work from most likely to least likely.

W/ that concept, what would be the most likely cause of the problem ?

Start with the linkage.

Check the spring loaded sockets on the end of all your ball/socket throttle rods including the one from the carb to the governor...make sure they are all ok...this sounds like a linkeage problem more than carb or governor!

I have disconnected all linkage and just use the lever on the throttle and get the same results fully closed is idle any movement of throttle causes engine to race. Governor had a broken shaft and instead of replacing parts in a 72 year old governor I bought a replacement.

WELL....if ya got the linkage off...then moving the carb thottle a slight bit, makes the engine race.....I am thinking that the throttle rod is installed incorrectly...OR, the throttle plate is on the rod wrong!!!

Take a couple of pix of the carb, showing the top of the carb, and the engine side of the carb.....THEN either post the pix on this post, OR email the pix to me , so I can look at the carb from those angles.
BTW: ....The throttle plate and or the rod CAN be in wrong, and will do just as you are reporting..!!!!!

My email button is always on, at the bottom of this post, in the modern side of this forum. Just poke that button, and start typing!!!

I'll try to help you either by email, or telephone!!!

I just ordered a new governor from this site and installed it last week, it did the same thing as you described. Any movement of the outside lever would move the block side lever to wide open. I took it apart and everything seemed good. Old governor was wore bad, but put it back on and it works a lot better than the new one. They"re sending a replacement at this time. New is not always good in this case.

Did you keep the old cab parts? the butterfly might be different than the original it might be reversed like mine was. Check the configuration of the old vs new where the linkage is connected.
