9N Valve Removal

Can somebody please give me the poor mans version on valve and valve spring removal and replacement? I gave the retainers a tug, but nothing. My FO4 is very lacking here and I dont want to bust a lot of retainers for nothing.
Do I need to get a pring compressor ect or can this be done with standard stuff???

Thanks for the help and Merry Christmas!

I did mine with a screw driver and a needle nose
pliers. There is a engine rebuild video avail on
ebay that shows this process well.

I used a modifiyed screw driver and went in thru the manifold ports and pryed down on guides enough to get the clips out. Then removed every thing as an assembly. best to have the valve you are working on fully seated.
Merry Christmas.

Hi,

I can sympathize as I just went through it. Go to John's Old Iron page and look his 9N rebuild - a pic is worth 1k words.

lacking that: The clips are actually seated in machined recesses in the block. You need to push the valve guide down slightly to free 'em up. To do this, grind a screwdriver into a slight L shape, stick it in the inlet or exhaust port of the block - where the manifold bolts on- , and pry down on the guide. That will push the retainer clip down out of the recess, where you can just pull it off.

You'll be amazed.

The retainers will not come out until you compress or move the guides down about 1/8" no matter how hard you try. The valves come out as an assembly with the springs, at least most of the time.

As the others have said , a large screwdriver etc to push down on the guide . The exhaust guilds are probably tight from hot gas and carbon build up . Some carb cleaner / wd40 etc can help loosen the guilds so they can be pushed down .

There is a valve tool that is used to pull the valve guide down to let the retainer come out.I have the tool so dont fool with screw drivers. The bar grips the guide and pulls it down.there are slots in the guide that the bar slides into. The other end of the bar will lift the valve retainer so it can be removed.Ford used this system in the 32 v8.

I used a very big flat tip screwdriver with the one edge ground away to form a hook (lever point). You go in thru the exhust/intake manifold ports. The hook is on the valve guide and you lever up on the screwdriver pushing the retainer down enough to pull the retainer clip out. Or you can buy the bar at vanpeltsales.com

The best way I have found to get the valve assemblies out of the block is to use a big flat/spade screwdriver that has been ground down about 1/8 inch or so just up from the tip end about a 1/4" inch or so and long enough space ground down to let the cut out come out past the side of the block.
Place the screwdriver/prybar into the valve port on top of the valve guide close to the valve stem and pull up on the screwdriver/prybar to push the guide down enough to pull out the horse shoe keeper.
Next take that same screwdriver and place the tip end on the spring close to the end of the valve guide and smack it a few good ones with a hammer to drive the guide/valve assembly out the top.
Once it is out the top you can depress the spring and take the keepers off to dis assemble the units. Don't loose the little cup thingies that are on the bottom of the exhaust valves if it has rotating exhaust valves in it.
Only the intake valve guide should have seals installed on them when you go back up. None on the exhaust valve guides.
