9N voltage question

Wife found a 9N nearby at a yardsale yesterday. Fella said it was 10 volt. I don't know, but guessing its 8 volt. Needs new battery and I can drive it home. She said it had 4 caps on top of battery. My guess if it is an 8 volt battery in a 6 volt system. I want to have the right battery when I go get it, so am asking if anyone ever heard of anything other than 6 volt in 9N & What else I could do to get it to fire up and drive home. Thanks Joel

Joe........yer wife is a smart woman counting the battery caps. Yes, 4-caps is a rare 8-volt battery NOT 10-volts. Some claim the 1-terminal 3rd-brush 9N 6-volt genny can be jimmied to charge an 8-volt battery. Well yea, kinda, but you really end-up with a DISCHARGED 8-volt battery. The 8-volt battery trick is usually a BAND-AIDE for poor engine sparkies or even worse LOW COMPRESSION.

Iff'n the price was right, (must be, wife want you to buy it) buy it and temporary install a 12-volt battery, POSITIVE ground and driver home. The 12-volt battery won't hurt 'nuttin' for short time period of about 1-hr.

As fer what else? Modern no-lead gasoline jellys and clogs carburetors, and requires a rebuild iff'n its set for a while. NEW FRESH GASOLINE is always a good start. Also a NEW CLEAN DRY set of AutoLite 437's gapped = 0.025 is du-riggur. Ennytime you have starting problems, CHANGE yer SPARKIES.

'cours' a whiff of ether-quickstart is a good back up........Dell

Dell gave you good advice.

Depending on how rigged it is, you may have to jump the starter off with 12v, and just run the ignition off the new 6v battery.

Remember.. trans in neutral, clutch down, and then hook one jumper cable to the starter stud, and the other jumper cable to a ground.. like a radius rod. When you hook that last jumper cable up.. it starts to turn over.. so make sure the ignition is on. Don't press the start switch.. etc. Should be plenty of bat juice in the new 6v bat to run your ignition on the way home.. just make sure the 6v bat is charged up and not flat from setting on a store shelf for 6mo.

Don't run yourself over.. double check neutral and clutch down 3x.
