9N voltage question

Wife found a 9N nearby at a yardsale yesterday. Fella said it was 10 volt. I don't know, but guessing its 8 volt. Needs new battery and I can drive it home. She said it had 4 caps on top of battery. My guess if it is an 8 volt battery in a 6 volt system. I want to have the right battery when I go get it, so am asking if anyone ever heard of anything other than 6 volt in 9N & What else I could do to get it to fire up and drive home. Thanks Joel

A 9N was originally 6-Volt, (+) ground.

A battery with 4 caps IS 8-Volt, which are sometimes used on these tractors as a "bandaide fix" for a weak atarter, or wimpy/corroded/bad battery cables and connections.

Conventional wisdom on this seems to be to put it back to 6-Volt, making repairs as needed, so it cranks well, or make the jump to 12-Volt (-) ground, if a more modern sytem is desired.

Batterys are 2 volt per cell (cap).

The 8 volt was most likely put in it because of ware to help crank it better, the problem is getting the genny to charge it over 6 volts.

You should be able to go get a new 6 volt battery and get it going.

You will want to check the genny output voltage when you get it running to make sure it hasn't been steppd up and over charge your 6 volt battery.

At least that would be my plan....

Thanks guys. That is what I suspected, I just wanted to be sure not having seen it myself. I do want to drive it home this week.
