9N Won't stay running!!!

Just got done installing a new water pump. Everything went well. The tractor has been sitting for awhile and the battery was dead. I have a portable jumper...so I hooked it up and the tractor started right up. The problem is, when I took the jumper cable off the motor stoped running. so I left in on for about ten mins. at higher rpms. The alt meter was on 0 and when I put the lights on the needle jumped to the right a little. After ten mins. I took the jumper off and the motor stopped. My guess is bad battery or genny???
Can anyone help..thanks

Ron.......you asked......"My guess is bad battery or genny???"......YES, ennytime you have battery "issues", take it into autoparts or autobattery store for "free" checkout.

As fer yer "alt meter" being 0 and jumping to the right (+) when you put yer lites on, that implies yer voltage regulator sensed a demand for MORE amps from yer genny which responded. So I don't think yer genny is bad.

But NEXT TIME, tell us iff'n yer tractor electricals are 6-volt or 12-volts. And NO, 10-mins of charge time won't charge a DEAD battery. It takes HOURS. .......Dell

I would check your battery connections. You may have corraoded teminals. both ends of both cables. if the generator was charging or getting current flow to the battery, I would have expeced that the engine would have kept running and not died when you disconnected the jumper if the cutout relay was activated.

Use a voltmeter to see if the generator is working. Check the voltage before starting and see if the voltage increases after it is running.

The ammeter jumping to the right could also be because the polarity is reversed. A discharge would make the ammeter move that direction if using negative ground.

If the battery was totally flat when you hooked the jumpers on backwards, it would take on the reversed polarity.

Question to Dell Why would you need to know in this case if it is 6v or 12v, maybe it has been converted to 24v and could still have same problem???

boler......because its a just a good idea. Now don't be fer gittin "funny" with 28v airplane systems. And many shadetree mechanics can't tell the difference between generators and alternators and conveniently call them both "gennys". Therefore by telling us whether their tractor battery is 6v or 12v we can make an educated guess. Each have different "problems" and therefore the answers will be different. .......respectfully, Dell, guesser with CRS

Gentleman,
It is a 6Volt. And I know the diff between a genny and a alternator...give me some credit, I just replaced my water pump, rear axle seals, soldered up holes in my radiator, full brake job,muffler,tune-up,and rebuilt my leveling box he he he. Truth be told, I could not have done any of it without your help...MUCH appreciated! I am a carpenter by trade so I can get by with some of this easy stuff.
Thanks again
PS...Just replaced the battery...she runs great.
