A/C D17 steering Problem

Our steering goes where it wants to.,if you turn to the R. the left wheel stays straight.,and vise-versa.,I'm afraid it is goin to snap the front tie rod as it lock's up wheel tite., we filled the unit w/ atf as stated in manual as it was not too low anyway., Thank's.,

I am certainly no AC D17 expert, but I have to say that the description of your problem is not very clear. It sounds to me like your problem is related to the steering linkage rather than the steering unit or gearbox. It reminds me of a 1955 Studebaker that once was our family vehicle. That Studebaker had a severely worn bushing in a control arm that connected the right tie rod to the left tie rod. There was a full half turn of play in the steering wheel, and one wheel would move well before the wheel on the other side would move. I drove that old car with a learners permit when I was 15 or 16 years old. I guess I am lucky to be alive. That Studebaker would run 115 miles per hour in second gear overdrive, but when I shifted into high it would slow to 110 MPH. It steered much better at high speeds than while moving slowly.

Hard to know from the description.

Something to check, has the key sheared or wallowed out where the steering arm attaches to the left spindle?
