How do you recommend removing the fan from a 1944 John Deere A? I can't get it to move. Don't want to damage the pot metal trying.

Take a 1 inch socket and hit the collar that fits around the keepers holding the splined discs on. Make sure you support the very end of the fan shaft before you start hammering on the collar. This will require removing the fan shaft from the governor is it's not already??? Once you get the discs to start moving on the splines you will be able to remove the keepers and the collar. Then clean the splines up that will be visible after removing the collar and keepers. Next place something on the backside splined disc and drive on the center of the fan shaft to get the fan off.

Ideally an air hammer works great to push on the 1 inch socket and then I use a bearing splitter behind the fan to pull the fan off. If you don't have access to these tools I think a regular hammer will work and you might have to get creative on something behind the fan. Usually the fan will slide off fairly easy because you'll have gotten it to move at this point.

I use a couple of c clamps to compress the spring and then you might have to hit the collar that holds the keepers like 620 john mentioned. Use the c clamps to compress the spring again when putting it back together.

So it would still need to come off the governor?

It’s safest to pull radiator but WAY more work. You can sneak them out the side by pulling 3 bolts on the back of the fan shaft out of the governor and then pulling the shroud leaving it around the fan and whatever it has for an alternator or generator off you will need new shims probably on that rear of the fan shaft so count them. I’d probably recommend pulling the radiator so nothing gets scuffed up.
