A Ford 861 purchase

I went with a friend today to look at a 861 Ford tractor that had been advertised. The sheet metal was rusty but not bent up , the lift was slow and sluggish, the steering wheel only showed metal, the tires were worn, motor ran good with no smoke, the clutch and rear end seemed good and it needed a muffler and tail pipe, and had no power steering.It came with a 6 foot BUSH HOG in decent shape probably worth 400 bucks . Front tires were pretty good.Paid 1600 bucks. What do you think.

We recently purchased an 860 w/loader. Miserable tires, Plenty of rust. Lift very slow. Engine runs perfectly with no smoke. Gears and pto works well.Could not look much worse. Oh! also got a scrape blade. Paid $2500.00 I think you did very well. As an aside I am using electrolysis to treat the rust.The results are extremely good. If you or anyone are interested in the process I will post photos and details.

You did very well. Change all the fluids (trans, diff & hydraulics) out with New Holland 134 and your lift may be fine. Gear oil can get past the seals and contaminate the hydraulic fluid; replacing the gear oil with 134 eliminates this possibility.

The most expensive item to repair on the 861 is probably the two-stage clutch; if the clutch and PTO are OK you should be good to go.

Well worth what you paid. The 860 series fords were/are darn good tractors. That was my grandpa's main farm tractor for 30 years. Still got it in the shed and hope to finish getting the motor rebuilt this winter.

The Ford 860 is one heck of a tractor; one of my favorites. For this price, I'd jump on it.
