A little too small

Used the Stihl pro arborist with 14 bar to clear path to work from, but put the 32 bar on my 371XP. Big ash was 12 ft. from pole building, I wasn't worried about it one bit 31 years ago when I built but Ash borer got it. Tree was 36 diameter at cut and 90 ft tall and counted 91 rings. Used cable on lower limb 21ft up. Hit the ground within 2 ft. of where I intended.

So unless you had to back fell it you didn't fall it where you wanted you pulled it. I notch them about where I want them to fall then cut accordingly to make it fall where I want. I also don't try to make them fall in an exact spot unless it is around buildings. Then if room cut them at the base if not then start limbing it down.

That's going to be a lot of fire wood. We cut close to 40 ash down last weekend. Most were only a foot or so across. Had one big pin oak that blew over and was close to 3 foot wide and 20 foot long.

We have a lot here that are done for too. Have a few Blue Ash and a large one 12 ft. cir. at BH. Had State measure it for big tree. So far the Ash bore has not bothered the blue ones. Part of this one I cut yesterday will go thru woodmizer, has 33 ft. log.

A cable is not going to steer a three foot diam tree. That was s good job of felling with a little bit of good thinking added in.

We have a lot of Black Ash on our property in N MN, and the ash borer hasn't gotten there yet, but the wind has! It's not as big as yours, but lots are 20 inches, I have been cleaning it up for 2 years now, selling most of it for firewood. I gave about a cord to my cousin that took it to a sawmill, he likes to build furniture. I use cables and come-a-longs if there is any danger of damage when felling standing trees. I have a Maasdam rope come-a-long that I use the most, the rope stretches' quite a bit, so it pulls the tree right over where I want it.

Interesting, don't know where you live but I got the exact estimate of $2500 yesterday here in Western New York to cut down an Ash tree ready to fall on the barn. Must be a Blue Book somewhere for tree services.

This one had about 1/3 limbs dead this summer, I could have waited a year maybe before it started losing limbs on the roof.
Thought I'd better get down while still able. Cut and loaded 4 logs this afternoon headed to sawmill. Hard on old man almost 80!

I had thought my big blue ash was a black until the state got here to measure it. I had sent pictures but he needed to see it. I have made a good deal of furniture stuff over the years out of Ash.

Word of warning: I live in northern Maryland on several hundred acres and what I have discovered is that Ash trees killed by the borer rot at the roots first, forget about limbs falling, here its the whole tree with no warning.

I just felled a 16" oak that was between two of my shop buildings - 1' to one and 3' to the other. Tight quarters, as two feet either way would have damaged either building. Layed it where I wanted; didn't get close to either of the buildings, or the fence. 16" Stihl 023L with a carbide chain. Eats up oak!.
Dangerous work, though, felling trees. Stay safe.
