have a 49 A sat for 6 weeks wilue on vaction . came back grass real high . pulled plug on right cel. (cluch side) blew it out as water gets in there when it sits . tryed and tryed and tryed to start it would start on left cel. but never would stay runing tryed several times changed plugs 2 times checked spark o k cleaned mag cap . then checked compression lost it in right cel, tractor would backfire thew carb from right cel. so pulled head as i thought i head a broken intake vavle. head and vavles are fine piston looks ok . toke crankcase cover off , checked cam gear to make sure timeing marks lined up . thay are right on mark . toke mag off. and checked timeing with flywheel mark . slot on mag way off, so gov. gear must have jumped teath or broke kayway on govenner shaft and moved on gov, shaft . why would i have lost compression on right cel. if only gov. and timeing is out???? any ideas????

water was from leaking head gasket head was rebuilt 3 years ago and used new j d gasket. but always leaked alittle water when cold just right piston not left . after starting tractor ran fine and was vary strong .

Soooo, Murphy visited someone else for a change. Please don't send him back real soon. LOL. Going to start twisting wrenches on my G again soon, Don't need Murphy's help.

Might as well pull it down and quit trying to figure out what "might be wrong".

If you put a new head gasket on it and it still leaks, you need to pull the head and the block and surface both of them. Then you can start inventing gremlins. I would think the bearings would have to be missing to "jump a tooth".

It is not all that uncommon for a JD 2-Cylinder to loose ring-seal after long storage...
Shoot some engine oil into the cylinder with low compression and try it again..

Water getting into a cylinder is not a good thing..can be from anything from cracks, to a Head-gasket..OR, from setting OUTSIDE..!!

Ron..

Have you tried "Bars-Leaks" to see if it will stop..??

Check the bolts that hold the cam gear to the camshaft. Not uncommon for them to loosen and break. Pretty unlikely that a gear actually came out of mesh enough to jump time unless a bearing in the governor or camshaft failed.

going to start monday on the 51 A that blue a head gasket 3 years ago i got new head gasket friday and will use rebuilt head off of 49. have 1 more compleat head just need to clean and lap vavles, hope to have 51 runing by end of week . then later i will get back on 49 A and pull govener.

Pay close attention to the oil lead washer on the center stud. Some of the later cyl. heads need a different one then the early ones. Parts book should show which head casting number uses what.
Just a heads up since you are swapping them around. They may not be EXACTLY alike ,but will work with the proper matching parts.
