A Model clutch interchange

FINALLY got the clutch assembly off the A. It is a badly rusted mess, the say the least. I have a good clutch assembly off an earlier tractor (S/N 562xxx). Does anyone know if the earlier model clutch assembly will interchange with my tractor (S/N 689xxx). The internals of the earlier clutch are not as beefy as the clutch that came off my tractor, but mine isn"t going to be working hard anyway. If they will interchange it would save me a lot of time and money!!

Thanks!!!!

The parts manual shows the clutch was changed at serial number 648000 I believe. Doubtful that it can be changed.

You will want a clutch assembly for tractors above 648,000. It is an improved clutch with more plates than the earlier clutch. While the older clutch may fit it would be a step backwards. Many owners of older tractors (especially pullers) use the later pulley to improve their clutches. Mike

Thanks Mike and Pappy. After lots of PB Blaster and some hammer and punch work I got the rusted up clutch apart and it isn't as bad as I thought. If the drive and driven surfaces clean up all I may only have to buy the lined disk (the one with 3 ears). And Mike you're right. While this tractor won't be actually doing any work, it doesn't make sense to go backward.

If you do update to the pulley & clutch system used on the later A's, just be advised you will need the reduction gear as well.

I see your tractor is the later series. What I meant was the earlier pulley won't match the later reduction gears.
