A Nice Delivery

Just got a final UPS delivery today from Richmond VA of rebuilt parts for the 8N and 961.

The 1950 8N has been a do as pocket book/time allows project, so some stuff has been sitting in the shop for a while, but waiting for a couple of parts.

For the 8N: rebuilt water pump, starter, and carb.
For the '58 961: rebuilt water pump, 12v generator.

I also have only a few hours of prep work left on the sheet metal for both tractors. Looks like I might get some painting in this weekend if the above 30* forecast holds. I will then be able to get the shop warm enough.

$48 for water pumps. The genny was $100, carb was $80, and the starter was $160. Some of the prices are higher than new replacement, but I get to keep my OEM parts, no replacement junk from the Land of Almost Right, and helps support American jobs. Money well spent, in my opinion.

bead blast and paint cast blast cast iron paint would be my guess...

If you are satisfied that's all that counts... The last starter I had rebuilt some 7/10 years ago cost $100,,, I was shocked when he converted it to 12Vs even tho I did not ask him to...

He knows me and knows I convert every thing to 12V he did not understand all I wanted was the 6V starter freshen up so I could re-sale it.. I sold it for a small profit so it worked out in the wash.. Why I take him stuff like this is I know he will use the best parts available if there is such a thing as better anymore.. I would hope your guy works in the same manner...

Glad it worked out for you in the end. I think my rebuilder (same as Bruce's) uses good parts. I've been happy with the work they've done with my regular worker, so I feel pretty confident putting their work on other tractors.

I have a question: What is the purpose of rebuilding a 50 + year old water pump verses just purchasing a new one? Hardly see automobile rebuild pumps for sale. Just wondering if the old is much heavier cast and worth saving or what? Thanks.

Labor rates are what killed rebuilding pumps... It seams china can not reproduce a replica so rebuilding a original looks inviting even if the cost is the same...

Rebuilding a water pump is not as EZ as it looks... You will need to record the measurements of the impella and pulley and install it damm close to were it came off and then theirs the issue of knowing were and how to support those parts so you do not fudge up the housing... I have never rebuilt a N pump but have done a few MF's... You have to take pleasure in doing it are the replacement pump cost is so high you can make good money rebuilding a old pump...

On all the pumps (cars'trucks/tractors I replace I check impella height to pump body and find some way out of spec from the original,,, you can never be to close as long as the impella does not contact the pump body BUT it can be to far away and affect pump performance...

I figure he made a buck a min. are less for his time and earned it...
