I just bought an old A. I got it to start and it will keep running on its own but when idling it wants to surge. Ive had the carb apart and it was filthy. Ive cleaned and cleaned. I removed all the brass plugs and ran wiree thru them. There is one that i could not get out its barly existant. It is the one on the side that bolts to the intake you have to go thru the flange to get out it is the top one. There are two there on top of one another. Which passage is this? would like to have her running a little better.

Know nothing of your tractor except the word "surge" you used. My experience with the word is the speed "governor" is not adjusted properly to adjust the engine rpm as a function of the load applied to it.

Well im not sure about the governor as ive never messed with one. I can also pull the idle adjust needle all the way out of the carb and it runs the same. The throttle shaft seemed to be alright. So I may have a gov. problem? A little more history on the tractor. It has sat for some time and this is the first ive heard it run. When i first started it she ran fine. On initial test drive it started to cough some black smoke and started running like this

When it surges at idle, pull the choke out easy until it levels out...if this stops the surging then it is blocked carb passages. You must drill all passages to get them clean.

On mine the length of the throttle rod to the governor was critical. It's adjustable. I think the operators manual has instructions.

Plugged idle passage will cause surging at idle, if it smooths out when the throttle is opened the governor is just trying to do its job.

At wot it smoothes out a little but does still do it. Ill clean the carb some more and check throttle rod adjustment

Give Jonathon Jeremiah a call at 618-967-6816. He just rebuilt a couple of carburetors for me and they were EXCELLENT! His prices were a bit lower than the other national carb guys and he got it done much faster than what the other guys said the lead time would be.
He boils them out and drills those passageways with special drill bits. Wire won't get all of the crud out and might still leave you with problems.

You'll get a like new carburetor back and won't have the hassle of taking yours on and off a dozen times.

Jonathon works for a JD dealer in the day time and old carburetors in the evenings. I've known him for about 6 years and he's a great young guy who's learned the trade from the old timers.

(quoted from post at 17:23:42 12/05/11) Dont miss the passage located in the carb stem.
Bingo,it was plugged used a small bit to get her clean. I reinstalled the carb and she idled fine. Now may just have to set the float a little better. Thanks all

It sounds like your idle passage is fairly well plugged. You might have a look at my post reply to "looking for popping john" in a newer post. RonMC
