A note on fuel tanks

As I cleaned my bike tanks I kept inspecting the interior of the tank. After several hours of soaking the insides with the etching compound I saw no change to the inside of the tank. I concluded the etching compound did nothing and money wasted. In the future I would not bother with this product.

I have found that course river sand or pea gravel cleans the inside of metal fuel tanks a cans better than anything. And its free.

I have strapped fuel tanks filled about half with water and 2 or 3 cups of sand to the rear tire of lawn mowers or ATVs to clean them. Let them rotate at a slow speed and its like wet sanding the inside of the tank or can.

I've done dozens of bike tanks with a cement mixer.A couple of cups of sandblast sand,a cup of square nuts, wrap it all up tight in a blanket and wedge it into the mixer.Furniture cushion foam takes up a lot of the space in the tub.Run it for a couple of hours, then maybe turn the tank end for end and run it for a couple more hours.I do the same thing with tractor tanks, just use more sand and nuts. Then I strap them to a rear tractor wheel, jack it up and let that run in gear for a couple of hours.
